Rank (English) Rank, Otto
Born: April 22, 1884 in Vienna
[Died] October 31, 1939. New York Austrian psychoanalyst. A student of S. Freud. In the early days, he applied the principles of psychoanalysis to the study of myth, literature, and art. Freud highly valued Rank's abilities and made him his favorite student, but in 1924 Rank broke with Freud by formulating the theory that all neuroses are caused by trauma at birth, i.e., separation anxiety from the mother. From 1924 onwards, he lived mainly in Paris and the United States, and settled in the United States in 1936. After that, he engaged in research on psychotherapy. He edited the psychoanalytic journal "Imago" (1912-24). His main works include Der Künstler (The Artist) (07), Der Mythus von der Geburt des Helden (The Myth of the Hero's Birth) (09), and Das Trauma der Geburt (The Trauma of Birth) (24).
