Oeshiki - Oeshiki

Japanese:
Oeshiki - Oeshiki

Originally, it meant a gathering and a ceremony, but mainly in the Nichiren sect, it refers to a memorial service held by followers in memory of the founder Nichiren around October 13th, the date of his death. The Goeshiki ceremony at Ikegami Honmonji Temple in Ota Ward, Tokyo, is famous, and especially on the 12th, a vigil, there is a procession of many lanterns and fan drums, and it is crowded with hundreds of thousands of pilgrims. In 1282 (Kōan 5), Nichiren left Mt. Minobu due to illness and headed for Hitachi (Ibaraki Prefecture), where he rested at the residence of his follower, Ikegami Munenaka, and passed away at the Ikegami residence (currently Daibo Hongyō-ji Temple) in the same year. Nichiren's memorial service was called Miei-ko or Gomyoko, and followers gathered at their respective temples every year to remember Nichiren and to confirm their ideal of "the whole heaven and seas return to the Mystic Law." Over time, however, it became an event for the common people. During the Edo period, the Manto procession became popular, and the lively atmosphere of the event in the city of Edo is conveyed in Basho's haiku, "Gomyoko and five sho of sake like oil."
