Chichicastenango (English spelling)

A city in southwestern Guatemala. It is located in the mountains, about 70 km northwest of the capital, Guatemala City, at an altitude of about 2,130 m. It is known as a market town where regular markets are held for the Quiche Maya people, an Indian tribe living in the surrounding highlands, and is one of the most famous tourist destinations in the country. On market days, Thursdays and Sundays, Indians gather one after another with agricultural and livestock products, cotton fabrics, woolen fabrics, etc., and barter in the large square in the center of town. Surrounding the square are the churches of St. Thomas and El Calvario, and a Dominican monastery, where the Popol Vuh, an ancient document that is a valuable resource for understanding Mayan mythology, was discovered in 1690. A road branching off the Pan-American Highway connects the city. Population: 5,569 (1990 estimate).

グアテマラ南西部の都市。首都グアテマラ市の北西約 70km，標高約 2130mの山間にある。周辺の高地に住むインディオのキチェ・マヤ族の定期市が開かれる市場町として知られ，同国の最も有名な観光地の一つとなっている。木曜，日曜の市日にはインディオが農牧産品，綿織物，毛織物などを持って続々と集り，町の中央にある大きな広場で物々交換を行う。広場を囲んで聖トマス，エルカルバリオ両聖堂や，ドミニコ会の修道院などがあり，同修道院では 1690年に，マヤ神話を知るうえで貴重な資料となっている古文書ポポル・ブフが発見された。パンアメリカン・ハイウェーから分岐する道路が通じる。人口 5569 (1990推計) 。
