A story from ancient India. A tale of a chaste woman included in the third volume of the great Sanskrit epic, the Mahabharata. Author and date of creation unknown. Princess Savitri of the Madra kingdom, after her beloved husband Satyavat's death, appeals to Yama, the god of death, for her fervent love. The god of death is moved by Savitri's chaste heart and brings her husband back to life. Savitri's chastity is revered by Indian women as a model for women, and this story has been passed down to later generations.
