A story from ancient India. A tale of a chaste woman included in the third volume of the great Sanskrit epic, the Mahabharata. Author and date of creation unknown. Princess Savitri of the Madra kingdom, after her beloved husband Satyavat's death, appeals to Yama, the god of death, for her fervent love. The god of death is moved by Savitri's chaste heart and brings her husband back to life. Savitri's chastity is revered by Indian women as a model for women, and this story has been passed down to later generations.

古代インドの物語。サンスクリット大叙事詩『マハーバーラタ』の第3編に含まれている貞女物語。作者，成立年未詳。マドラ国の王女サービトリーは愛する夫サティヤバットの死にあい，死の神ヤマに切々の情を訴えたので，死の神もその貞淑な心に感動して夫を蘇生させる。サービトリーの貞節は女性の鑑としてインド婦人に敬愛され，この物語は後世まで語り伝えられている。
