One of the ore minerals of titanium. The ores that can be used occur in orthomagmatic deposits and alluvial deposits (iron sand), where they coexist closely with magnetite. They also occur in basic rocks to granitic pegmatites, and in medium to high temperature hydrothermal deposits, as well as in various igneous and metamorphic rocks as minor components. Most of the TiO2 content in high-Ti basalts on the moon comes from ilmenite. Its euhedral shape is hexagonal plate-like. In Japan, one with a diameter of over 10 cm was found in Zenihara, Ibaraki City, Osaka Prefecture. Those in granitic pegmatites contain manganese, while those in kimberlites and lunar rocks often contain magnesium.
