An old town in the Yasu River delta on the southeast shore of Lake Biwa, Yasu District, Shiga Prefecture. It produces Omi rice and cultivates vegetable gardens in greenhouses. Freshwater fishing is also carried out in Lake Biwa. It is home to the Hyozu Shrine Garden (a scenic spot) and the Lake Biwa Miami Swimming Pool. In 1993, Lake Biwa was registered as a Ramsar wetland. In October 2004, it merged with Yasu Town, Yasu District, to form Yasu City. 20.94 km2 . Population: 12,132 (2003). 滋賀県野洲(やす)郡,琵琶湖の南東岸の野洲川三角州にある旧町。近江米を産し,蔬菜を中心とした施設園芸を行う。琵琶湖での淡水漁業も行われている。兵主(ひょうず)神社庭園(名勝),琵琶湖マイアミ水泳場がある。1993年に琵琶湖がラムサール条約登録湿地となる。2004年10月野洲郡野洲町と合併し,野洲市となる。20.94km2。1万2132人(2003)。
