A concept that explains the relationship between the personality integrated by the ego and society. It can be translated as identity, subjectivity, or sense of belonging. It was used as a philosophical term, but since the 1960s it has been widely used in sociology and psychology. It was Erikson who defined the concept of identity in sociology, calling the unchanging self that integrates the various "I's" when the self plays various roles in a changing environment identity. Erikson formulated this concept based on Freud's theory, stating that identity crises become apparent during the individual's development process, especially in adolescence, and it has been widely accepted and applied as a concept for understanding the relationship between the individual and society. The problem of loss of identity in modern times has become a research topic in sociology as a phenomenon of incompatibility between the individual and society. 自我によって統合されたパーソナリティと社会との関わりを説明する概念。同一性，主体性，帰属意識などと訳される。哲学用語として用いられていたが，1960年代以降社会学，心理学で広く使われるようになった。社会学におけるアイデンティティ概念を定義したのはエリクソンで，変化する環境の中で自己がさまざまな役割を演じるとき，そうしたさまざまな〈私〉を統合する変わらない自己をアイデンティティと呼んだ。エリクソンは，フロイト理論を基礎に，個人の発達過程のなかでとくに青年期にアイデンティティの危機が顕在化するとしてこの概念を定式化したが，それは個人と社会の関係性をとらえるための概念として広く受け入れられ，適用されてきた。現代におけるアイデンティティの喪失の問題は個人と社会の不適合の現象として，社会学の研究課題となっている。また最近では，人類学や政治学において，アイデンティティの，個人を他者との連鎖の中に位置づけ，個人を超えた想像の全体へと結びつける側面が注目され，近代世界における〈想像の共同体〉としてのネーションやエスニシティを，個に強固な集団的アイデンティティを付与する物語としてとらえる視点が有力となっている。
