…Mother-of-pearl was imported to Japan early on, and is still in use at Jodo-ji Komyobo in Hiroshima and Seigan-ji in Fukuoka. The mother-of-pearl of this period differs from the thick shell technique used in the Tang Dynasty, which used luminous shells, in that it was made by thinly slicing shells such as abalone, placing the shell on the surface of the vessel, coating it with lacquer, and then scraping off the lacquer on the shell to create a pattern, a technique known as the thin shell technique. This technique developed rapidly during the Yuan Dynasty, and was produced energetically, mainly in Ji'an Prefecture in Jiangxi Province. …
