Tsugaruishi River

Japanese: 津軽石川 - つがるいしがわ
Tsugaruishi River

A river that flows north through central-eastern Iwate Prefecture and empties into Miyako Bay. The Toyomane River, which originates at Torikonomori (850 meters) in the Kitakami Highlands, and the Okawa River, which originates at Takatakimori (1,160 meters), join in Yamada Town, Shimohei County to form the Tsugaruishi River. It is 13.1 kilometers long. It is known for the fishing of Nanbu Hanamagari Salmon. In 1905 (Meiji 38), the Tsugaruishi Village Salmon Artificial Hatchery was established by the Fisheries Association, and was temporarily managed by the prefecture, but in 1950 (Showa 25), it came under the management of the association. From early December to January, there is a tourist event where people catch salmon that swim up the river to spawn.
