Chise (English spelling)

Japanese: チセ（英語表記）chise

Ainu dwellings. A typical Hokkaido Ainu cise is a single room measuring 3 x 4 bays or 2 x 3 bays, with a small earthen-floored anteroom (sem) to protect the entrance from direct exposure to wind and snow. The roof and walls are thatched. A hearth is placed in the center of the room, slightly toward the entrance, and a fire shelf is hung, with a bed for the host and his wife just to the left of the entrance. To the right are beds for the family. A sacred window (kamuypuyar, also called rorumpuyar) is opened at the front at the back of the room, and an altar used for sacred festivals is placed outside the window.

アイヌの住居。北海道アイヌのごく普通のチセは3間×4間，あるいは2間×3間の1室作りで，入口が風や雪に直接さらされるのを防ぐために，小さな土間の前室セムsemを設ける。屋根，壁とも茅（かや）で葺く。内部の中央やや入口寄りに炉を切り，火棚をつり，入口のすぐ左側に主人夫婦の寝台を設ける。右側には家族の寝台がある。部屋の奥の正面には神窓(カムイプヤル。ロルンプヤルともいう)を開き，窓の外に神祭のときの祭壇がある。
