Atlas - Chizucho (English)

Japanese: 地図帳 - ちずちょう（英語表記）atlas

Also called an atlas or atlas. A collection of maps bound together in a book, loose-leaf format, or loose maps in a box, with a unified structure in terms of area, subject, and type. Area-wise, there are world atlases, census atlases, regional atlases, etc.; subject-wise, there are historical atlases, ocean atlases, climate atlases, political atlases, language atlases, and other thematic atlases, school atlases, etc.; type-wise, there are loose-leaf atlases, and holographic atlases with loose maps in a box or bag; phenotype-wise, there are pictorial atlases, lunar atlases for other celestial bodies, star atlases, and anatomy atlases for the human body. All atlases are primarily composed of illustrations, and are intended to express the content through maps and illustrations. The name "Atlas" was given to the world atlas completed by G. Mercator in 1595, after the name of the giant who held up the sky in Greek mythology. (→ World Stage )

アトラス，図集ともいう。何枚もの地図をまとめて，書物の形にとじるか，ルーズリーフ式に抜き出し自在にするか，ばらの地図をそのまま箱に入れるようにするかしたもので，地域，主題，型式に関して全体としての統一的な構成となっている。地域について，世界地図帳，国勢地図帳，地域地図帳など，主題について，歴史地図帳，海洋地図帳，気候図地図帳，政治地図帳，言語地図帳などの主題図地図帳，学校地図帳など，型式について，ルーズリーフ地図帳，ばらの地図を箱または袋に入れたホリオ地図帳などの製本上の区分のほかに，表現型式について，絵地図帳 (ピクトリアルアトラス) ，他天体についての月面図帳，星座帳 (星図集) ，あるいは人体についての人体図集などがある。いかなる地図帳も図版を主体とした内容構成で，地図および図版で内容を表現する意図をもっている。アトラスの名称は，1595年に完成した G.メルカトルの世界地図帳に，ギリシア神話の天空を支えた巨人の名にちなんだアトラスをタイトルにつけて以来である。 (→世界の舞台 )
