…Following these, Kano Eino compiled Honcho Gashi, which was groundbreaking as a full-scale Japanese painting theory and history with a historical perspective. Kano Yasunobu's Gadō Yoketsu (1680) and Tosa Mitsuoki's Honcho Gaho Daiden (1690) were both given to students as secret teachings, and their contents show skillful adaptations of painting theories from the Song and Yuan dynasties. Following the early painting theories by the Kano and Tosa schools, in the 18th century, orthodox arguments appeared in support of emerging schools of painting such as ukiyo-e, literati painting, and Western-style painting, and the field took on a diverse appearance. …
