Trimontium

...it flourished as an agricultural processing and commercial center, and became a major fortress city in the central Balkans. After Greek and Roman rule it was called Trimontium (Three Hills) and became the center of the eastern part of the Roman Empire. After the invasion and destruction of the eastern tribes, the Slavs and then the Bulgars emerged as rulers of Thrace, and it flourished again during the First and Second Bulgarian Empires.
