A city in the Var department in southern France on the Cote d'Azur. Population 6,300 (1985). With the Montagne de Maure to the west, it is famous for its mild climate and scenic port. It has flourished as a stopover point for coastal shipping since Roman times. Due to the lack of a railway, it came into the limelight as a resort town from the end of the 19th century, later than Nice and Cannes. It was popular with writers and painters such as Signac, Matisse, and Colette. Many famous people, including Brigitte Bardot and Karajan, had villas here. It is quiet in winter, but bustling with vacationers in summer. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
