Born: September 3, 1873 in Kumamoto [Died] August 15, 1957. Tokyo Jiuta Koto performer. Maiden name Nakayama. She became blind at the age of four, and at the age of six, she became a disciple of Hase Koki, who was known as a master of Kyushu-style Jiuta Sangen (→ Sangen, Shamisen). She was known as one of the three great Hase students, along with Fukuda Eika I and Kitani Toshie. She moved to Tokyo around 1900 and studied Koto Kumiuta with Yoshida Hisako, who was from Nagoya. In 1902, she returned to Tokyo and began teaching Jiuta and Sokyoku. In 1904, she married Kawase Junsuke I, a Kinko-ryu shakuhachi performer. She invited her teacher Hase Koki to Tokyo and worked hard to spread Kyushu-style arts in Tokyo. With the help of a sangen master, she improved the jiuta sangen, which is the most popular today, by inclining the pigeon chest part close to the resonator body so that it could be played using the kansho up to the high range. In addition, the tip of the bachi was made wider than that of the Tsuyama bachi invented by Tsuyama Kengyo I of Osaka during the Bunka era (1804-18), and the lead piece (→ piece) was also improved. In 1947, he founded the Rishinkai. He trained many excellent students, including Ota Satoko, Abe Keiko, Inoue Michiko, Yagi Keiji, and Kawase Hakushu.
