Kawaguchi Kigai

Japanese: 川口軌外 - かわぐちきがい
Kawaguchi Kigai

Western-style painter. Born in Wakayama Prefecture. His real name was Magotaro. He also went by the name Kigai for a time. He dropped out of Wakayama Normal School and moved to Tokyo in 1912 (Taisho 1), where he studied Western-style painting at the Pacific Art Association Research Institute and later at the Japan Art Institute. He traveled to France twice, from 1914-1923 (Taisho 8-12) and from 1924-1929 (Taisho 13-Showa 4), where he studied Cubism under Roth and Léger. In 1929, the year he returned to Japan, he exhibited his works in Europe at the Nika Exhibition and received the Nika Prize. In 1930, he founded the Independent Art Association with his comrades, and produced works such as Girl and Seashell, which showed a style of painting that fused Cubism and fantasy. In 1943, he left the Independent Art Association. After World War II, he became a member of the Kokugakai (1947-63), and exhibited his works at the Venice and San Paulo Biennales, developing his own unique abstract style.
