Ise calendar - Isegoyomi

Japanese:
Ise calendar - Isegoyomi

These calendars were published by calendar makers in Uji and Yamada, Ise Province (Mie Prefecture), and distributed by the onshi (prayer leaders) of Ise Shrine as souvenirs all over the country along with the shrine's taima. They are so-called fureki calendars, not calendars for sale. They originated during the Warring States period, when onshi of Ise Shrine delivered Kyoshi calendars from Kyoto to users all over the country upon request. As the demand for Kyoshi calendars increased, calendar makers were born in Yamada, the onshi's hometown, and the Ise calendar was born. The first calendar was published in 1632 (Kan'ei 9) by Moriwaka Tayu, and the number of calendar makers increased after that, reaching a total of 13 by the time of the Jokyo calendar reform (1684), and 20 by the beginning of the 18th century. It is said that the number of calendars published reached 2 million copies. The Ise calendar is a folding calendar consisting of two sheets for each year.
