A city in southern Gunma Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1940. It occupies the north bank of the midstream Tone River, the northwestern part of the Kanto Plain, and is adjacent to the southeast of Maebashi City. The central city was a castle town of the Sakai clan in the early modern period, and a market town in the area at the southern foot of Mount Akagi. It is on the Ryomo Line and the terminus of the Tobu Isesaki Line. It is a center of the silkworm-raising region, and has long been known as the production area of Isesaki Meisen. After World War II, wool textiles were also produced, but from the late 1960s, industrial parks were developed, and industries such as transportation, electricity, and general machinery developed, and came to account for nearly 70% of the city's manufacturing shipments (2001). Kezōji Park, north of Isesaki Station, has a comprehensive sports facility and an amusement park, and there are many seasonal flowers, making it a popular spot for vacationers. In January 2005, Akabori Town, Sakai Town, and Higashi Village in Sawa County were incorporated. The area is 139.44 km 2 . 207,221 people (2010). → Related items Ryomo Line Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
