A group organized based on Ise faith. Also called Shinmei-ko. Shinmei was a general honorific for gods, but later came to be used to refer to Ise Jingu. In most cases, they are formed for the purpose of visiting the shrine, so they are called "daisan-ko." However, in northern Kagoshima Prefecture, there are some called "Onjo-ko," which are made up of elderly people. In these cases, the focus is on gathering at an inn on a set date to enjoy food and drink, so they do not actually make a pilgrimage to Ise. Usually, the head of the household becomes a member of the group, and they gather at a lodging that is decided by rotation, hang a hanging scroll of Amaterasu, worship, and eat and drink. In some places, the group meets three times a year in the first, fifth, and September of the lunar calendar, while in others it may be monthly, every other month, or even once a year, depending on the region and the times. Then, by drawing lots, one or two people will go to Ise Shrine with the money that everyone has saved. They go before the spring work or after the autumn harvest, but there are also some that go around the end of the year or the beginning of the new year, called two-year visits. When they leave, a substitute pilgrim invites the members to a banquet. This is called Detachi. When they return, they are welcomed up the slope to the village border, and a banquet called Habakinugi or Douburi is held, where they give them sacred talismans and souvenirs. Those who accompanied each other may become specially close friends after the trip, called Tabizure. In addition to these, we must also take note of the existence of the Ise Ko and Shinmei Shrines, which have no direct connection to Ise Shrine.
