...However, as the power of England expanded throughout the country's history, the term "Great Britain" came to be used indiscriminately, vaguely, and ambiguously to refer to a wide area including "England and Wales," "Great Britain" including Scotland, and Ireland, and then, as the country acquired overseas colonies, even to the "British Empire" (or the British Commonwealth). And since the country opened its borders at the end of the Edo period, the Japanese view of Britain has been dominated by a perspective that seeks to discover the reasons for the growth of this small island nation, just like Japan, and the image of Britain as a colonial empire, "the world's factory," parliamentary government under a constitutional monarchy, and a country of gentlemen has taken root among the Japanese. However, there are two misunderstandings at the base of this view of Britain.
