A city in the southern part of Okinawa Island, Okinawa Prefecture. Established as a city in 1921. Prefectural capital. An old port town, Okinawa Prefectural Government was established in 1879, and developed as the gateway to the Okinawa Islands and the center of politics, economy, and culture. It was destroyed in World War II and taken over by the US military, but was restored to city status in 1946, a military and civilian government was established, and urban planning was implemented in 1955. It merged with Shuri City and Oroku Village in 1954, and Mawashi City in 1957, and rapidly recovered. Shopping streets such as Kokusai-dori, Heiwa-dori, and Sakurazaka, as well as entertainment districts, developed, and both Naha and Tomari ports were developed. There is an international airport, the Okinawa Expressway runs through it, and the Okinawa Urban Monorail opened between Naha Airport and Shuri in August 2003. It is the center of bus transportation on the island. It has a strong consumerist character, with over 80% of the people employed in the tertiary industry, but its specialities are awamori, bingata, and lacquerware. There are many historical sites, including Sogenji Temple, Shureimon Gate, Shuri Castle (the main hall was restored in 1992 and is a World Heritage Site), Tamaudun (World Heritage Site), Sonohyan-utaki Stone Gate (World Heritage Site), Shikinaen Garden (World Heritage Site), Naminoue Shrine, and World War II battlefields. The Hari race on May 3rd-5th and the Great Tug-of-War on October 10th are annual events that attract many tourists.
