Hiunkaku

This is a representative example of architecture from the early Edo period, standing in Tekisuien Garden, a section of the grounds of Nishi Honganji Temple in Kyoto City. It is a national treasure. It is a three-story building overlooking Soroike Pond, and is said to have been originally located in Jurakudai, built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and moved to its current location during the Kan'ei period (1624-1644), but there is no definite proof. The first floor consists of the Yanagi Room (Shokenden), Hakkei Room, Funairi Room, and tea room. The Yanagi Room is a smaller version of the Nishi Honganji Shoin Taimensho, with an upper-upper level and an innovative and stylish design. The tea room is called Ikujaku no Seki, and was added around 1795 (Kansei 7). The second floor is called the Kasen Room, and has a veranda all around it. The third floor is called the Tekiseirou and has an unusual, military-style flower-head window. The roofs of each floor are varied, including karahafu and irimoya gables, and the building's timber cutting is delicate, giving it a light and airy appearance as garden architecture. The attached building includes the Oukakudai bathhouse (an important cultural property).

京都市西本願寺境内の一画にある滴翠園(てきすいえん)に建つ江戸初期の代表的建築。国宝。滄浪(そうろう)池に臨む三重の建物で、豊臣(とよとみ)秀吉が造営した聚楽第(じゅらくだい)にあったものを寛永(かんえい)年間（1624～44）に現在地に移建したと伝えるが、確証はない。一階は柳の間（招賢殿）、八景の間、船入(ふないり)の間、茶室からなる。柳の間は西本願寺書院対面所を小規模にした形式で、上上(じょうじょう)段まで設け、斬新(ざんしん)でしゃれた意匠が試みられている。茶室は憶昔席(いくじゃくのせき)の名があり、1795年（寛政7）ころに付属された。二階は歌仙の間といい、周囲に回縁がつく。三階は摘星楼(てきせいろう)とよばれ、軍配形の異形の花頭(かとう)窓を開く。各重の屋根の形は唐破風(からはふ)や入母屋(いりもや)破風など変化に富み、また、建物の木割は繊細で、庭園建築として軽快なたたずまいをみせる。付属建物には黄鶴台(おうかくだい)浴室（重要文化財）がある。
