It is said that the rise and fall of Western movies depends on the state of political power in the U.S. For example, when John F. Kennedy became president in 1960 and issued the "New Frontier Proclamation," the Cinerama blockbuster "How the West Was Won" (1962) was made in response to the declaration, aiming to revive the frontier spirit, and the 70mm blockbuster "The Alamo" (1960), which depicted the history of the suicide battle during Texas independence and promoted national pride, was made. However, after President Kennedy was shot and killed in 1963, America plunged into the quagmire of the Vietnam War, and "Black Power" and "Red Power" began to gain prominence. As a result, Westerns stagnated or became darker. Director John Ford commemorated the history of Indian persecution in his last Western, Cheyenne (1964), and in the 1970s, films such as Soldier Blue (1970) and Little Giants (1970), which were themed around the massacre of Indians, were made in the image of the Vietnam War.

　西部劇の盛衰はアメリカの政治的な力のあり方に左右されるといわれる。例えば，1960年，ジョン･F.ケネディが大統領に就任し，〈ニューフロンティア宣言〉がなされると，それに応じ，フロンティア･スピリットの復活をめざしてシネラマによる超大作《西部開拓史》(1962)がつくられ，テキサス独立のおりの玉砕戦史を描いて国威発揚をうたった70ミリ大作《アラモ》(1960)がつくられる。しかし，そのケネディ大統領が63年に凶弾に倒れ，アメリカがベトナム戦争の泥沼に踏み込んでいき，〈ブラックパワー〉や〈レッドパワー〉が大きく台頭してくるにつれて，西部劇は沈滞し，あるいは暗い内容におちこみ，ジョン･フォード監督はその最後の西部劇《シャイアン》(1964)でインディアン迫害の歴史を追悼し，70年代に入るや，ベトナム戦争のイメージでインディアン大虐殺を主題にした《ソルジャーブルー》(1970)，《小さな巨人》(1970)などがつくられる等々。…
