A general term for plants of the Dianthus genus of the Caryophyllaceae family. This genus has over 300 species distributed mainly in the semi-arid regions of Eurasia, northern North America, and Africa. Most are perennial plants with linear, opposite leaves that are well adapted to sunny, dry environments. Four species grow wild in Japan: D. superbus L.var. longicalycinus (Maxim.)
