A general term for plants of the Dianthus genus of the Caryophyllaceae family. This genus has over 300 species distributed mainly in the semi-arid regions of Eurasia, northern North America, and Africa. Most are perennial plants with linear, opposite leaves that are well adapted to sunny, dry environments. Four species grow wild in Japan: D. superbus L.var. longicalycinus (Maxim.) ナデシコ科ナデシコ属Dianthusの植物の総称。この属はユーラシアの半乾燥地域を中心に,北アメリカの北部やアフリカに300種あまりが分布する。多くは多年草で,対生する葉は線形になり,陽地乾性的な環境によく適応している。日本にはカワラナデシコD.superbus L.var.longicalycinus (Maxim.) Williams(イラスト),シナノナデシコD.shinanensis Makino,フジナデシコD.japonicus Thunb.(イラスト),それにヒメハマナデシコD.kiusianus (Yatabe) Makinoの4種が自生している。
