Thaw - Yukidoke (English spelling) Оттепель/Ottepel'

Thaw - Yukidoke (English spelling) Оттепель/Ottepel'

A novella written by Russian and Soviet writer Ehrenburg. The first part was published in 1954, and the second in 1956. The story revolves around the love affair between Lena, the wife of a factory manager, and the young engineer Kolocheev, and also features the eccentric old man Sokolovsky and the skeptical young painter Volodya. At first glance, it seems like a novel of manners, but it depicts the lives of citizens from various angles against the backdrop of the process in which Soviet society gradually regains brightness after Stalin's death. The first part was published in 1954, the year after Stalin's death and two years before the criticism of Stalin. There had been no literature that had so keenly captured this atmosphere, and one can sense the author Ehrenburg's "eyes" that were ahead of their time. This title later became synonymous with the easing of the Cold War, but was ultimately negatively evaluated in official Soviet criticism. Looking back at it from today's perspective, however, the author's foresight should still be given much credit.
