Date of birth and death unknown. Italian painter of the 14th and 15th centuries. No authentic works of this artist remain, and his name is better known as the author of "Il libro dell'arte" (The Book of Art). Little is known about his life, but according to the description in "Il libro dell'arte" and other sources, he was born in Colle di Valdelsa as the son of Andrea Cennini, and after studying for 12 years under the Florentine painter Agnolo Gaddi, he moved to Padua, married, and served the local prince Francesco da Carrara. "Il libro dell'arte" is a practical guide to painting, and although it includes didactic discourse for beginners, it is mostly devoted to explaining practical techniques. It is a valuable clue to understanding the techniques of fresco, tempera, and other art at the time, as well as the way of thinking about art.
