...The Urals are rich in copper, magnesite, titanium, nickel, coal (Chelyabinsk coalfield and Pechora), gold, platinum, bauxite, oil (Volga-Ural oilfield), natural gas (Orenburg gas field), potash salts, and precious stones such as malachite. On a map, the Urals appear as a large mountain range, but in Russia, the peaks and watersheds are not considered to be any kind of boundary line dividing the region. Rather, the Ural Economic Region (approximately 680,000 km2) has been established, including the Ural Mountains and their foothills on both the east and west, and the population is rapidly increasing.
