Kuni Sasaki - Kuni Sasaki

Novelist. Born in Shizuoka Prefecture. Graduated from Meiji Gakuin, he taught English literature at high schools and universities around the country, while translating works by Mark Twain and others, which influenced him to become a humorous novelist, a minority in Japan. His works include "Those Who Leave Claw Marks on the Ground" (1931-34), "Foolish Little Brother and Wise Older Brother" (1928), "Garamasa-don" (1930), "The Three Musketeers" (1934-35), and for boys and girls, "The Painful Schoolmate" (1927-29), "The Village Boys' Group" (1930-32), "The Girl with a Hundred Faces" (1932), and "Tom and Thumb" (1933). His works are based on a healthy rationalism, and it can be said that he was the first to give a modern character to Japanese humorous novels, which had tended to end up as rakugo-style puns.

小説家。静岡県に生まれる。明治学院を卒業し、各地の高等学校や大学で英文学を講ずるかたわら、マーク・トウェーンなどを翻訳し、その影響で、日本では少数派であるユーモア小説の作家となった。作品に『地に爪(つめ)跡を残すもの』（1931～34）、『愚弟賢兄』（1928）、『ガラマサどん』（1930）、『求婚三銃士』（1934～35）などがあり、少年少女向きに『苦心の学友』（1927～29）、『村の少年団』（1930～32）、『少女百面相』（1932）、『トム君サム君』（1933）などがある。彼の作品は健全な合理主義を根底にもっており、ともすれば落語風の駄洒落(だじゃれ)に終わりがちだった日本のユーモア小説に、初めて近代的な性格を与えたといえる。
