…Despite the persecution during the French Revolution and the oppression of the countries surrounding France, it was the first organization other than religious orders to embark on foreign missions, and among the approximately 4,000 members who have been missionaries in the Orient over the past three centuries, 163 have been martyrs. The first to arrive in Japan was Théodore Augustin Forcade (1816-1885) who arrived on a French warship in 1844 (Koka 1), and in 1859 (Ansei 6), Prudence Séraphin Barthélemy Girard (1821-1867) entered Edo with the French Consul General as the first officially recognized Catholic missionaries since the ban on Christianity in the Kan'ei era. Currently, the organization is active in Japan, with its bases in Hakodate, Tokyo, Shizuoka, Kobe, and Kitakyushu. …

…フランス革命期の迫害，フランスを取り巻く諸国による圧迫などの困難にうちかって，修道会以外の組織としては初めて外国宣教に乗り出し，過去3世紀間東洋で宣教した約4000人の会員のうちから163人の殉教者を出した。日本へは1844年(弘化1)フォルカードThéodore Augustin Forcade(1816‐85)がフランス軍艦で琉球に到着したのが最初であり，59年(安政6)にはジラールPrudence Séraphin Barthélemy Girard(1821‐67)がフランス総領事一行とともに，寛永の禁教以後はじめての公認されたカトリック宣教師として江戸に入った。現在日本では函館，東京，静岡，神戸，北九州市を拠点に活動している。…
