The idea of ​​worshiping the devil, the embodiment of evil and the antithesis of God, the supreme good, as if he were a god, and making him the basis of one's life or thoughts. In the Middle Ages, heretical ideologies such as the Cathars were condemned as being in league with the devil, and when witch hunts were actively carried out in the 16th and 17th centuries, witches met their fate of death for being devilish. In England, gatherings such as the "School of Night" associated with Sir Walter Raleigh and the "Hellfire Club" associated with Francis of Wycombe were denounced as being devilish, and in France, the black mass surrounding Madame de Montespan, the favorite mistress of Louis XIV, was publicized and exposed. In literature, the late 19th century was a time when amoral decadence and aestheticism were rampant, and writers who gazed intently into the dark side of life were labeled as Satanists. Baudelaire, Hoffmann, Huysmans and other writers appeared on the scene, and in Japan, the early works of Tanizaki Junichiro are part of this lineage.

至高善である神のアンチテーゼである悪の権化、悪魔を神のように崇拝し、人生または思想のよりどころにする考え。中世においてカタリ派などの異端思想が悪魔にくみするものとして弾劾され、また16～17世紀に魔女狩りが盛んに行われたとき、魔女たちは悪魔主義のゆえをもって死の運命をたどった。イギリスにおいてはサー・ウォルター・ローリーにまつわる「スクール・オブ・ナイト」、ウィカムのフランシスにまつわる「地獄の火(ヘルファイア)クラブ」などの集いが悪魔主義的であると糾弾され、フランスではルイ14世の寵妃(ちょうき)モンテスパン侯爵夫人を取り巻く黒ミサが喧伝(けんでん)され、摘発された。文学では19世紀末に反道徳的退廃主義や耽美(たんび)主義が横溢(おういつ)し、人生の裏に潜む暗黒面をひたすらに凝視する作家が悪魔主義的というレッテルをはられ、ボードレール、ホフマン、ユイスマンスらが登場し、日本でも谷崎潤一郎の初期の作品がこの系譜に連なる。
