Flower customs

...Following his first treatise on Noh based on the teachings of his father Kannami, this work is a compilation of the essence of his mastery of the art over a period of about 20 years, starting when he was about 40 years old. It consists of 18 articles in total, including 6 articles with slogans about practice as titles, and 12 articles entitled "Things to Do..." except for the final "Oku no Dan". Initially, it was compiled into 14 articles under the title "Kashuyu", but it was expanded several times and finally completed in 1424 (Oei 31, when the author was 62 years old) or shortly before that. The contents of each article are all considered as a practical system from the standpoint of performers, especially the shite, and the first six articles mainly reveal the mastery of the singing, dancing and impersonation that are the components of Noh, that is, vocal music, dance and dramatic acting, while the latter twelve articles touch upon issues related to direction, acting and rehearsals, as well as the aesthetic theory of Noh, the theory of artistic rank and criticism.

…父観阿弥の教えに基づいて書いた最初の能楽論《風姿花伝》に続いて，彼が40余歳のころからおよそ20年間にわたる芸得の神髄を書き連ねたもので，稽古に関する標語を表題として掲げた題目6ヵ条と，末尾の〈奥の段〉以外は〈……事〉と題する事書12ヵ条の計18ヵ条から成る。初め《花習（かしゆう）》という題名で14ヵ条にまとめていたものを，その後，数次にわたって増補し，最終的には1424年(応永31，著者62歳)か，その少し前に成立した。内容は各条ともすべて演技者，とくにシテの立場における実践的体系としての考察で，前半の題目6ヵ条では主として能の構成要素である歌舞と物まね，すなわち声楽･舞踊･劇的演技に関する体得を披れきし，後半の12ヵ条では，演出･演技･稽古に関する問題から，さらには能芸美論，芸位論，芸評論にも言及している。…
