Shravakas and pratyekabuddhas are for the benefit of themselves, while bodhisattvas are for the benefit of themselves and others. In this way, in Buddhism there are three types of teachings and practices, high and low, and each has a different object, content, and even a state that can be reached. In opposition to this idea, the Lotus Sutra and other works emphasize the teaching of the One Vehicle, which claims that these three teachings are not essentially different, but are merely expounded in different ways as a means of guiding people, and that they all belong to the same Mahayana Buddhism.
