An insect (illustration) of the Lepidoptera family, Acaridae, found mainly in the tropical regions of Asia. Acarid moths, found throughout most of Japan, have red, anchor-shaped markings on their forewings, a vivid color on the underside, and fly during the day, so they are often mistaken for butterflies, but they can be distinguished by their whip-shaped antennae, not club-shaped. When they are stationary, they fold their wings behind them like butterflies. They fly actively in the daytime in mountainous areas twice a year, in spring and summer. Their wings span about 3.5 cm. The larvae feed on the leaves of Dryopteris inodensis (Dryopteridaceae), and overwinter as adults. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
