Osh (English spelling)
Osh is the capital of Osh Province in southwest Kyrgyzstan. It is located on the alluvial fan of the Akbla River, which flows north from the Alaysky Mountains, on the southeastern edge of the Fergana Basin. It is an ancient city that appears in records from the 9th century, and in the 15th century it was an important oasis along the trade route (→Silk Road) leading to China and India. Mount Suleyman-Tow (1,175.6m) in the west has been revered as a holy mountain for Islam for over 1,500 years, and its five peaks and mountainside are home to ruins, caves with rock paintings, and places for religious ceremonies such as mosques. It was registered as a cultural heritage of the World Heritage Sites in 2009. There are factories producing textiles (silk and cotton), electrical equipment, shoes, furniture, and food products (oils and meat). There is a pedagogical university, a local museum, a theater, and a botanical garden. It is the terminus of the railway from Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan. It is also the starting point of the Trans-Pamir Highway, which extends to Khorog in Tajikistan, and connects to the capital, Bishkek. Population: 224,300 (2006 estimate).
