Forensic pathologist and human geneticist. Born in Mie Prefecture. Graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Tokyo Imperial University in 1916 (Taisho 5) and became an assistant in the forensic medicine department. After studying abroad in Europe and the US (1921-1924), he returned to Japan and became a professor at Kanazawa Medical University, where he taught forensic medicine. In 1936 (Showa 11), he became a professor at Tokyo Imperial University, retired in 1952, and became a professor at Tokyo Medical and Dental University before becoming director of the National Research Institute of Police Science in 1960. He proposed his own theory on the inheritance of ABO blood types, discovered new blood traits such as the Q blood type, and achieved great success in a wide range of fields including fingerprinting and parent-child identification. He was also active in the field of forensic medicine, and was involved in the Shimoyama Incident and the Teikoku Bank Incident. He received the Imperial Academy Award in 1943, became a member of the Japan Academy in 1947, and was awarded the Order of Culture in 1956.
