An old city in the southwest of Shizuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1963. It occupies the alluvial fan on the west bank of the Tenryu River and the southern end of the Akaishi Mountains. Like Hamamatsu City to the south, it has been home to textile and lumber industries since the end of the Edo period, and automobile, motorcycle, electrical and machine part manufacturing since World War II. It is also home to the cultivation of mandarin oranges and melons, greenhouse horticulture and plant production. It is served by the Tenryu Hamanako Railway and the Enshu Railway, and has many commuters to Hamamatsu. In July 2005, Tenryu City, Haruno Town in Shuchi District, Sakuma Town in Iwata District, Misakubo Town, Tatsuyama Village, Maisaka Town in Hamana District, Yutome Town, Hosoe Town in Inasa District, Inasa Town, and Mikkabi Town were incorporated into Hamamatsu City. 66.64 km2 . 静岡県南西部の旧市。1963年市制。天竜川西岸扇状地と赤石山脈南端部を占める。南隣の浜松市と同様,江戸末期からの織物・製材工業,第2次大戦後の自動車・オートバイ・電気・機械部品の製造が盛ん。ミカン,メロンなどの栽培,施設園芸,植木生産も盛ん。天竜浜名湖鉄道,遠州鉄道が通じ,浜松への通勤者も多い。2005年7月天竜市,周智郡春野町,磐田郡佐久間町,水窪町,龍山村,浜名郡舞阪町,雄踏町,引佐郡細江町,引佐町,三ヶ日町と浜松市へ編入。66.64km2。8万5465人(2003)。
