An American film produced in 1919 and directed by Cecil B. DeMille. It is the most daring and erotic portrayal of the sexual customs of American women just after World War I, causing unprecedented controversy in Hollywood history and giving birth to the DeMille legend. It is based on the play The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1902) by J.M. Barrie, known as the author of Peter Pan, and the screenplay for the film was written by Jeanie McPherson, a former actress. Sensing the rise of the avant-garde women of the times, the so-called "flappers," DeMille cast Gloria Swanson, a new type of actress who was neither pure nor seductive, in his films The Man Who Loved Her and The Woman Who Loved Her (both 1919).In his sequel, A Man and a Woman, he satirically depicted the reversal of the master-servant relationship between British aristocrats and their servants, in which a butler (Thomas Megan) shipwrecked on a deserted island bosses around his mistress (Swanson) and his servants.

1919年製作のセシル･B.デミル監督のアメリカ映画。第1次世界大戦直後のアメリカ女性の性風俗をもっとも大胆にエロティックに描いて，ハリウッド史上類のない物議をかもし，〈デミル伝説〉を生んだ風俗映画。原作は《ピーター･パン》の作者として知られるJ.M.バリーの戯曲《あっぱれクライトン》(1902)で，女優出身のジーニー･マクファーソンが映画用の台本を書いた。時代の先端をいく女たち，いわゆる〈フラッパー〉の台頭を察知したデミルは，清純でも妖艶でもない新しいタイプの女優グロリア･スワンソンを起用して，《夫を換ゆる勿（なか）れ》《連理の枝》(ともに1919)をつくったが，これに続くこの《男性と女性》では，孤島に漂着した執事(トマス･ミーガン)が女主人(スワンソン)たちをこき使うというシチュエーションにおいて，イギリスの貴族と使用人の主従関係の逆転を風刺的に描いた。
