A port city in Essex County, Massachusetts, USA. It is located about 30 km northeast of the state capital, Boston. It is known as the site of the Salem witch trials in 1692. It was also the setting for Hawthorne's novel "The House of the Seven Gables."
A city in northwestern Oregon, USA. The state capital. Located in the center of the Willamette Valley. Surrounded by fertile farmland, it has developed as a distribution center for agricultural products. Food processing and paper manufacturing are thriving. The state capitol, built in the Art Deco style and featuring an abundance of marble, is famous.
