Dutch Telescope

[Inventions and Developments]
The telescope was invented in the Netherlands in 1608, and after hearing this story, G. Galilei built his own in 1609, using it to observe celestial bodies and making various discoveries. The telescope he built combined a convex lens and a concave lens, and was called the Galilean telescope (or Dutch telescope). It produced an erect image, but because of its narrow field of view, it is now only used for opera glasses. A combination of two convex lenses is called a Kepler telescope, and was announced by J. Kepler in 1611.

From [Telescope]

…Galileo, hearing of the success of the Dutch telescope, carried out theoretical analysis and built a prototype telescope the following year. Telescopes from Lippershey to Galileo combined a convex objective lens and a concave eyepiece lens, and are called Dutch telescopes or Galilei telescopes. Although the image is erect, it has the disadvantage of a narrow field of view, and is currently only used in opera glasses. …
