Iconoclasm in the Byzantine Empire was divided into a first and a second period, beginning with the Council of Nicaea in 787 under Regent Irene, mother of Constantine V, which restored icon veneration, followed by a period when Leon V banned it again in 815. Iconoclasm finally came to an end in 843 when Regent Theodora, mother of Michael III, reinstated iconoclasm. The first period saw intensified theological debate, and the icon veneration movement was led by the Damascus monk John in the first half of the 8th century, who, based on the doctrine of Christ, argued that icons of Christ were correct because of the humanization of the Logos, that the invisible God could not be imaged, but Christ could be imaged because he was God incarnate as a human, that this humanization purified matter, and made it suitable for depicting Christ, and that icon veneration therefore represented a confession of faith in this purification. Pope Constantine V countered, arguing that the depiction of Christ was impermissible because it portrayed his divinity, and that the only true image of Christ was in the Eucharist, where only the identity of the image and the person was preserved.
