An evergreen perennial fern of the Dryopteris family. It often forms a dominant community in chinquapin forests. The rhizome grows upright from an upward angle, and several large leaves grow in a clump. The leaves are pentagonal-ovate and 3-4 times pinnate. The central axis and rachis are covered with brown scales that are somewhat compressed, but those at the base of the petiole are long, linear, yellowish brown to reddish brown, and form a bushy bundle. This is where the Japanese name "Kuuhauino-de" comes from. The sporangia are small, located slightly toward the midrib of the lobe, and are surrounded by a finely lobed envelope. It occurs in warm areas west of the Kii Peninsula, and is close to subtropical elements, but is rare in areas with heavy rainfall. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
