The capital city of Kurdistan province in western Iran. Population 271,000 (1994). Most of the inhabitants are Kurds. It was founded in 1636-37 by Sulayman Khan of the Ardalan dynasty, a powerful Kurdish prince who recognized the suzerainty of the Safavid dynasty. It was the political center of the city until the principality was abolished by the Qajar dynasty in 1867-68. Today, it is a bustling trading center for nuts, tragacanth, and fox skins produced in the area, and is known for its walnut processing and manufacturing industries (sugoroku, chessboards, and cigarette cases), and also has a thriving carpet industry.
