The working world

Japanese: 労働世界 - ろうどうせかい
The working world

Japan's first full-scale organ newspaper. When the Labor Union Promotion Association and the Ironworkers' Union were formed in 1897 (Meiji 30), it was launched on December 1st as their joint organ newspaper. Editor-in-chief Katayama Sen, it was a bi-monthly tabloid newspaper. It played a major role in educating and organizing workers. In June 1900 (Meiji 33), it became a monthly newspaper, and from September it came under Katayama's personal management, but ceased publication on December 21st the following year with its 100th issue. In January 1902, it was re-released as a daily newspaper called Naigai Shinpo, but on April 3rd it was re-titled Labor World (a magazine published three times a month), and continued to be published until February 23rd the following year, when it was again renamed Socialism on March 3rd, becoming the organ newspaper of the Socialist Association.
