Also called elastic fiber. One of the important fibrous components that make up connective tissue, it is highly elastic as its name suggests. Elastic fibers are mainly made up of a protein called elastin, and when pulled, they stretch about 2 to 2.5 times their original size, and when the force is removed, they return to their original size. In loose connective tissue, they are 0.2 to 1.0 μm in diameter, but in elastic tissue, they are thicker, have many branches, and are anastomosed, spreading out in a net-like or membranous form as a whole. 弾力繊維ともいう。結合組織を構成する大切な繊維成分の一つで,名のとおり弾力性に富む。弾性繊維は,おもにエラスチンelastinとよばれるタンパク質からなり,引っ張ると2~2.5倍くらいに伸び,力をとり去ると元に戻る。疎性結合組織の中では径0.2~1.0μmを示すが,弾性組織elastic tissueでは,もっと太く,かつ枝分れが多く,吻合(ふんごう)しあい,全体として網状にひろがったり膜状を呈したりしている。
