[Born] about 1385. Dunstable? Died: December 24, 1453. London. An English composer. Little is known about his life. He was also an astronomer and mathematician. He served as a musician to the Duke of Bedford, and it is almost certain that he stayed in France, especially Paris, from 1422 to 1435. His music, characterized by its emphasis on consonances of thirds and sixths and its new way of dealing with dissonances, was widely circulated on the continent and had a great influence on G. Binchore and G. Dufay. About 55 of his works have been preserved, and the four-part motet Veni sancte Spiritus and the Italian song La verde are well known.
