French composer. He entered the Paris Conservatory at the age of 11 and studied composition under Thomas. He established a firm position in the French musical world with elegant operas in the style of Gounod, such as Manon (1884), Werther (1892), and Thais (1894), and had a wide-ranging influence on the world of composition from the 19th century to the early 20th century. He was a professor of composition at his alma mater from 1878 to 1896. Many talented composers came from his school, including Chausson, G. Charpentier, Pierné, and Florent Schmitt.
