The ability to wash and wear immediately. Also called "easy care." When washed, it dries quickly, retains its original size and shape, removes wrinkles that may have developed during washing, and can be used without ironing. This is one of the properties required of fibers to reduce the labor required for housework. Hydrophobic synthetic fibers such as polyester do not swell with water and have good elastic recovery even when wet, so they have excellent wash-and-wear properties. In contrast, fabrics made of hydrophilic fibers such as cotton shrink and retain wrinkles when washed and dried. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
