It is part of the Virunga Mountains, which lie between Lake Edward and Lake Kivu at the bottom of the Great Rift Valley in Africa, and borders the west of Mount Karisimbi (4,507m), the highest peak in the range. It is known for its caldera at the top and a semicircular lava lake within the crater, which continues to be highly active.
