Aso Sea

Japanese: 阿蘇海 - あそかい

A lagoon in northern Kyoto Prefecture. It is also called Yosa-no-umi. It is separated from Miyazu Bay by the 3.3-kilometer-long sandbar of Amanohashidate. It has an area of 5.2 square kilometers, a circumference of 14 kilometers, and a maximum depth of 14 meters. The Noda River flows into the lagoon, forming a small delta, at its western end, and it is connected to Miyazu Bay only by a narrow waterway at the southern end of Amanohashidate called Monju no Kirito, so there is little exchange of seawater and the salinity is low. It is part of Tango-Amanohashidate-Oeyama Quasi-National Park.

Amanohashidate
The sandbar was created over many years by sand carried by the wind and tides in Miyazu Bay. The photo shows the view from the Ejiri side, with Asoumi Sea on the right. A forest of over 7,000 black pine trees stretches out to the opposite shore in a beautiful green belt. 京都府北部にある潟湖(せきこ)。与謝海(よさのうみ)ともいう。長さ約3.3キロメートルの天橋立(あまのはしだて)の砂州(さす)によって宮津湾と隔てられる。面積5.2平方キロメートル、周囲14キロメートル、最大深度14メートル。西端には野田川が小三角州をつくって流入し、また宮津湾とは天橋立南端の「文殊(もんじゅ)の切戸(きれと)」とよばれる狭い水路で通じているにすぎないので、海水の交流は少なく、塩分は低い。丹後天橋立大江山(たんごあまのはしだておおえやま)国定公園の一部。
