A term for seaweed. In addition to algae that grow in freshwater rivers, lakes, marshes, and puddles, it also includes aerial algae that grow on tree trunks, rocks, soil, moss, and other places with some moisture, snow algae that grow on ice and snow, hot spring algae that grow in hot springs, and even symbiotic algae that live in symbiosis with animals (corals and green paramecium), plants (azolla), fungi, and lichens. As such, there are great differences in the environments in which freshwater algae grow, but it is common for species to be found that are adapted to each environment. Brown algae and red algae are mainly found in the sea, and only a limited number of species are found in freshwater, but green algae and diatoms are found in both marine and freshwater environments, and euglena are found in freshwater.
